    FAQs

Modular outdoor kitchens are made up of individual components—grill units, prep stations, storage, sinks, etc.—that can be mixed and matched to fit your space and cooking needs. You can start with a basic setup and expand over time, or rearrange components as your lifestyle evolves.

A modular kitchen is different from a regular (traditional) kitchen in several key ways. Modular kitchens are made up of pre-fabricated units or modules—such as cabinets and shelves—that are manufactured in a factory and then assembled on-site. Aside from allowing for quick installation, this also offers the flexibility to easily replace or reconfigure components as needed.

In contrast, regular kitchens are built on-site by carpenters and tend to be more fixed in structure, which makes repairs or upgrades more time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Our Elysia line of modular outdoor kitchens is designed for quick, effortless assembly rather than arriving fully pre-assembled in one piece.

You can integrate signature Fontana wood-fired pizza ovens directly onto dedicated modules, and add most gas or charcoal grills using grill bays designed to fit standard built-in models. For convenience, the system supports most outdoor-rated refrigerators, wine or beverage coolers, and even ice makers, all of which fit into specialized fridge or beverage station modules.
You can easily add a sink-and-faucet setup with Fontana’s plumb-ready sink module, and the system includes cutouts and access for utilities like gas, water, and electricity. Additional upgrades such as trash pull-out cabinets, storage drawers, cutting board inserts, and electrical outlets for small appliances can also be integrated easily into the unit.

A modular outdoor kitchen usually starts with grill or cooking modules, which house built-in gas, charcoal, or wood-fired grills—or pizza ovens like those from Fontana. Next are prep station modules, which provide countertop space for preparing food. A sink module with a faucet is often included for handwashing and food cleaning, and is usually pre-plumbed for easy water and drainage hookups. Refrigerator or beverage center modules offer cold storage for drinks, meats, or ingredients, and may include an ice maker or cooler drawer.

For storage, most modular setups include base cabinets or drawer modules for utensils and other accessories.

The amount of time needed to set up your modular kitchen will depend on the number of pieces in your layout. Each modular section should take about an hour.

You do not need to hire a professional to help install your modular kitchen! These kitchens are made to be a great DIY project that can be completed in a weekend. If, however, you would prefer to hire someone to help, there are very simple step-by-step instructions and videos available for each section. We can also connect you with a certified installer if you prefer, and in select locations, we provide installation services ourselves.

Yes. One of the key advantages of Fontana modular outdoor kitchens is their reconfigurability. If you choose Fontana’s Neolith countertops, each piece is cut to match its specific module—so you can rearrange your layout at any time without affecting the fit. However, if you use a custom countertop, the layout can still be changed, but the top would need to be removed and refabricated to match the new configuration.

While you have the ability to have a permanent custom countertop installed onto a Fontana kitchen, it does limit your ability to customize it over time.
